In all probability, young players enjoy the game many times more when they are scoring goals one by one. In designing the practice schedule, include such Youth soccer drills that have many opportunities for them to score goals.
These opportunities can be made available to them during small sided games, full field scrimmages, and shooting drills. In kids soccer drills, keep on varying the procedures in small sided games and full field scrimmages with a view to encourage players to score more.
It also works to practice games that don’t need a goalkeeper or where goalie’s participation can be restricted within limits. With a view to boost the chances of increasing the number of goals scored, add more goals or expand the ones that are already in use.
With time, as players become competent in shooting techniques and its tactical knowledge, the possibility of scoring more goals arises. Similar to passing skills, players should be trained in shooting techniques as well at the beginner’s stage. And then these can be practiced more seriously at any time during the later stages of player’s growth.
In youth soccer practice, one of the most effective ways to improve shooting skills is through using drills. With a view to score goals efficiently, players should perform shooting drills and develop their shooting skills. Still, a player’s shooting skills are best developed step by step.
Different forms of youth soccer drills can be designed with a view to perk up the shooting skills of players by including the following strings in them;
1. A stationery player kicking a stationery ball.
2. Stationery ball shot by a moving player.
3. Moving ball being shot by a static player.
4. A moving player shooting a moving ball.
Youth soccer coaching should involve teaching the players to kick the ball effectively while shooting. Most players frequently take shots from a close range using the inside of their foot. This helps the players improve their shooting capabilities.
When in situations where more strength is needed, instruct the players to use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. While their toes need to be downwards, the ankles should remain locked.
The elevation of the shoot is affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Ask the players to put their non-kicking foot a little ahead of the ball. This will keep the shot to the ground. Try to keep the players focused on striking the ball. Getting rid of all the distracting elements helps them focus better.
As their shooting technique improves, keep introducing the level of difficulty in the games. For instance, as their shooting improves, throw balls at various speeds.
