March 1st, 2010The Truth About Soccer Practice
Here’s a really simple way to be successful at teaching and training various techniques/skills in Soccer practice. Three different techniques are there that the kids can learn. Teaching soccer techniques are no different from teaching any other skill. These teaching methods have been given different names by different people. “FIG” is how I would like to describe it. It would be explained to you in the subsequent paragraphs.
Foundation: F in FIG stands for foundation and as the name suggests, it means the basics of soccer training. These are therefore the lowest levels of training. It’s necessary for every kid to know and learn these skills even when these are of no use in actual game. What is most important for a team to be versatile in the field of soccer is to have a strong basis.
Intermediate: In FIG, “I” means Intermediary or intermediate. These middle level techniques play a very significant role of tying the fundamentals with the game skills. This is where the difference between actual game skills and these middle level techniques must be clearly understood. Game skills in soccer coaching are different from the intermediate skills. But these skills have a major role to play in developing actual game skills.
Game: G means the actual game skills that aid in developing an individual into a soccer player. These are the essential skills that are necessary for all players to learn so as to perform in live matches.
In soccer drills, the use of demonstration-performance method is most helpful. This essentially means that you first give an introduction, then talk about the body, and then finish off with a conclusion. The players must be told in soccer practice what you are going to teach them. Then demonstrate that skill so that it’s easy for them to understand and copy. And then instruct them to do it themselves.
Teaching has three essential elements; One, kids must be told how to perform. Help them understand the skill and then show them as to how it is important for their growth in soccer. Second, they must be shown how to perform the technique. Show the players the skill or technique you wish them to learn. It is well known that kids remember better by watching.
To conclude, make the kids practice each and every skill. Sufficient time must be allowed to the kids so that can practice the game. Run as many repetitions as are needed for them to learn the skill. Do not speak a lot. Instead, you can focus on displaying the tricks and encouraging them to practice.
In conclusion, instruct them about their performance in soccer practice. Also tell them what steps they need to take to improve even more. Test this and it is an assurance that you will marvel at the improvements it brings to your sessions.

February 26th, 2010Soccer Practice - A Guide To Great Practice Sessions
You’ve probably heard it a hundred times that practice makes a man perfect. I’m not sure about others, but it’s certainly true for Soccer Practice sessions. The kids enter the ground everyday with a hope to try something exciting and new. Yet, it is extremely important in soccer training that they keep practicing old techniques that you teach them regularly.
It’s therefore your responsibility and a big one at that, to see that repetitiveness does not set in with kids doing few similar drills daily. Given below are certain tricks that’ll allow you to execute practice sessions in a disciplined, expected, and an attractive way.
1. Does this need more emphasis? Since kids follow their coach, you must act as their mentor. Be punctual on the field, show them your expertise with the ball, involve everyone in drills, and organize the sessions well. This has the effect of winning over the player’s confidence and respect.
2. Instruct the kids to bring their own ball to the field everyday. It is mandatory that every kid has a soccer ball. You should be having some extra balls in case some kids forget theirs.
3. A number of soccer moves are such that call for daily practice sincerely. Kicking, passing, dribbling, throw-ins are the essential elements of soccer practice. The kids are required to practice these repeatedly. Initially, few of the kids might not want to take part in these but you must ensure that everyone pitches in.
4. Introduce more games than soccer drills in practice sessions. This is mainly because comparatively more resilience and skill is required in games than drills. And it is easy to keep the focus on soccer as also to test new things with games.
5. Control is crucial for success for any team. With young players, it is no big deal to have mistakes. It is mandatory to correct all instances of indiscipline irrespective of their scale. But mind the method since you are dealing with young kids here and not adults.
6. While the session is on, you will note that some players do not run with the ball while others do. Make sure that this is not the case. Every kid should participate in one way or the other in the session. Talk to the players about their respective positions and teach them to be responsible in those positions.
7. Do not allow a lot of scrimmage. Ideally, it should not be more than 15 to 20 minutes at the end of each session. Also, do not appoint a goalie when scrimmaging. This will ensure that kids become good at defense.
8. Keep your eyes open for new ways to conduct trainings. This is the most recommended way of keeping the students interested in the training sessions.

February 23rd, 2010Soccer Practice - Learn To Organize Training Sessions
Here’s a really simple way to explain Soccer practice; there is no set rule. You have the option to create drills based on your imagination and experience. Along with this, remain alert of every small thing happening around you to identify such practices that can be changed to match your schedule. Here are some of the tips that can help you conduct a productive soccer training schedule.
Formulate flexible plans. It is quite natural that all your plans may not work out as desired. It may rain, the kids may not turn up, or you may get sick. Therefore, equip yourself with requisite tools to save your day’s plan as they may serve as barriers.
It’s best to keep in stock a number of soccer practice games ready. In case some of them don’t generate desired results, just remove them and move on to next. Flow with the training and you will get to know what is working best for the kids.
Make the kids warm up before every session. The kids should be made to utilize the soccer ball as an extension to their standard drills to warm up. Add exciting games like Fetch along with other nice practice exercises. The coach in this game would throw the ball towards the player and the player would return it by using both and one feet.
In addition, you can make them roll the ball using both the feet, kick the ball back and forth between the feet and so on. There are dozens of such soccer drills that warm up the players.
Make sure every player has a separate soccer ball that belongs to him. And when that is the case, design several individual activities that they can do using the ball. They should practice, shooting, dribbling, hitting the ball to the wall etc. Your movement should be free as much as possible and don’t include any lines.
In soccer coaching, once the individual activities are finished, group activities should get the attention. In order to practice, passing and receiving are excellent drills. It is essential that the kids behave as a team in group activities. It’s natural for the kids to take some time in getting used to the feeling of team spirit from individual play to team play. You need to act like a leader at this stage. Lay emphasis on supporting each other in team for winning matches.
At the same time, lead the weak players to develop the feeling of team spirit. These are activities that drive the spirit to play as a team.
Let the kids play soccer in teams and without a goalie. Tell them to shoot at the goals without any inhibitions. Also, instruct them to first attack and then defend. This helps them do their own thing and in the process develop something new.
This is the simplest method to carry out a soccer practice. Just let yourself free and create whatever you think will help the kids learn. The question of right or wrong drill doesn’t arise. The only thing you must ensure is flexibility. Enroll for our youth soccer coaching community where you will find tons of resources on youth soccer and coaching.

A good number of you might be wondering what on earth could be so big to get the team on a losing track. Then let me tell you, there can be numerous causes.
You will have to work very watchfully and advantageously in designing soccer drills for kids. Make it a point to know and value psychology of the kids. Communicate with them in a way that suits their age level. But unluckily, nearly all coaches are not experienced in this. They fail to realize that there is a distinction in coaching kids and coaching grown-up players.
Here you go; main errors that coaches make that result in a team’s downfall.
1. A lot of them consider their jobs as casual work. They don’t consider in necessary to be prompt in reaching the ground, set up the drills, or systematize practice sessions. Such behavior is bad and also has the potential to sadden the kids. Kids tend to be very serious about soccer and you should too. Make arrangements for youth soccer drills beforehand. Put together all kinds of equipments which you would need to accomplish the drills.
Be punctual. Make it a point to reach the field earlier than the kids. Actually, be there when the kids get there. It provides you some spare time to review the drills and organize things better.
2. When coaches give instructions for kids soccer drills, they get so carried away by their emotions that they keep going on and on. Can you believe how boring that can be? You must realize that players are more interested in playing than hearing. Keep your instructions brief and to the point. These sessions should be used to boost the confidence of the kids as well as motivate them.
It is extremely vital that the kids are not interrupted while playing. If you have observed anything that needs to be corrected, note it and discuss it after the drill. Also, you should be outside the field when the kids are enjoying the game.
3. Some coaches tend to get emotional or abusive with the players. In soccer drills for youth, this can prove to be catastrophic. It is never a good idea to show your emotions on the field. It is Ok if kids make mistakes. Do not forget that they are children. There is no need to get sensitive about it and be rude to the players.
If you do, understand that you not only make the kids lose interest in the sport but also invite disciplinary action. Soccer is a game of the intelligent. Make the kids realize this and you would have motivated them.
